GIRLS BASKETBALL: Trailing by five at intermission, No. 23-ranked New Trier played much more patiently on offense in the second half and it led to a 52-45 win over Evanston at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena. Boys Basketball: Evanston coach Ellis demanding more from Kits

thumbnail

BOYS BASKETBALL: Mike Ellis was a successful coach at Peoria’s Richwoods High School, his team placing second in the state two times in five seasons. Evanston is a proud program with a rich basketball history, too. That’s why Ellis, now the Wildkits’ coach, gets angry when his team doesn’t live up to his expectations — and its obligations.

BOYS SWIMMING: Evanston hasn’t won a conference championship since 2005, and the Wildkits don’t expect to win one this winter. But judging by Evanston’s collection of freshmen, including varsity contributor Ryan Knohl, it might not be long before the Wildkits are contenders again.

Wrestling: Evanston qualifies quartet for Glenbard North Sectional

WRESTLING: Evanston wrestling coach Rudy Salinas said the four Wildkits who qualified for the Glenbard North Sectional will compete with little pressure — but plenty of urgency. The quartet — Kurtis Henry (132 pounds), Gabriel Brieva (152), David DuBose (160) and Kai Drozd (182) — are seniors

GIRLS GYMNASTICS: Evanston gymnastics coach Chester Jones thought freshman Emily Varua had a chance to advance to sectionals on uneven bars. He was half right. The young Wildkit did advance from Friday’s New Trier Regional, but she did so on floor exercise.

Girls Basketball: Evanston can’t quite catch Loyd, Niles West

thumbnail

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Evanston limited Niles West superstar Jewell Loyd to 17 points at home on Friday, but couldn’t put the ball in the basket on the other end. Missing 44-of-56 shots from the field resulted in a 41-35 loss, giving the Wildkits an 0-3 mark against the Wolves this season; 0-10 in Loyd’s four years.

Boys Swimming: Hulseman smashes conference mark in 200 free

thumbnail

BOYS SWIMMING: Brendan Hulseman won’t soon forget Saturday. The Loyola senior most likely will swim at the state meet later this month at Evanston, but Hulseman’s day in the pool at Fenwick signaled a completed comeback.

Wrestling: Loyola’s Dancer, Paloian claim regional crowns

thumbnail

WRESTLING: Patrick Dancer and Michael Paloian both know that Loyola isn’t considered a wrestling power in the area. But that didn’t stop the two Ramblers, as both won regional titles at the Glenbrook South Regional on Saturday

Girls Basketball: Ramblers never locate their shooting touch against Trinity

thumbnail

GIRLS BASKETBALL: For a team that has won 21 games this season, it was reasonable to think that Loyola was going to be able to shake off a poor shooting start against Trinity in the GCAC Red championship Saturday night.

Wrestling: Five Titans wrestlers excited home fans by advancing out the Glenbrook South Regional

thumbnail

WRESTLING: Going out in front of the home crowd gives every athlete a special feeling, one that makes it easier to try harder and not disappoint the fans that have come to cheer on the protection the home turf.

Girls Basketball: Trinity cruises to GCAC title with romp over Loyola

thumbnail

GIRLS BASKETBALL: If stifling defense is going to be a component for a deep IHSA playoff run for Trinity, it was definitely on display Saturday night against Loyola in the GCAC Red division conference championship. In a rematch of last year’s final, the Blazers limited Loyola to single digits in all four quarters and cruised to a 49-18 title victory in River Forest.

Boys Basketball: Loyola no match for hot Waukegan squad

thumbnail

BOYS BASKETBALL: Loyola simply ran into a better team on Saturday. Arguably playing some of the best basketball in the Chicago area right now, Waukegan beat the host Ramblers 79-56 as part of the second annual War on the Shore Tournament.

Girls Basketball: Niles West clinches share of CSL South crown

thumbnail

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Niles West clinched at least a share of the CSL South crown with a 41-35 win over visiting Evanston on Friday. Wolves’ superstar Jewell Loyd’s game-high 17 points brought her within 28 of reaching 3,000 for her career.
