PARK RIDGE — Notre Dame led the way for the six Pioneer Press North Shore teams at Saturday’s Class 3A Maine East Individual Sectional, qualifying three wrestlers for next week’s individual state tournament in Champaign.
The Dons, who captured last week’s Evanston Regional, were led by senior heavyweight Gino Orlandi, who was the runner-up in his division. Orlandi lost 2-1 to Leyden’s Javier Rhoades in the night’s final championship match.
Earlier Saturday, Notre Dame sophomore Jimmy Gallardo booked his second trip to state by defeating St. Charles East’s Anthony Rubino 14-5 in the consolation semifinal at 113 pounds. He then defeated Glenbard East’s Anfarnee Rodgers 8-3 in the third-place match.
Notre Dame senior Sean Heneghan advanced to his first state tournament by way of a fourth-place finish in the 152-pound division.
“We hoped for a few more (qualifiers),” Gallardo said. “A couple of our kids lost in consolation semis, but they were close matches. They didn’t give up.”
The other local wrestler to make the sectional championship match was Niles West senior Vaughn Monreal-Berner, who fell 8-2 to Oak Park-River Forest’s Joe Ariola, who is undefeated (42-0) and ranked No. 1 in the state in his weight class.
But after two years of near misses at the sectional, Monreal-Berner became the program’s first individual state qualifier since Ben Rosen in 2010.
Maine South senior Terry Calkins finished third at 126 pounds and will compete at his third straight state tournament. Evanston senior Brandon Vamarasi came in third at 220 pounds, earning his first trip to Assembly Hall, site of the next week’s event. The state tournament takes place from Thursday to Saturday.
