Lincoln-Way edges Evanston

CHICAGO — Lincoln-Way, a combination of the Lincoln-Way schools, used its size to its advantage as it eked out a 5-4 win over Evanston in the second game of the Hockey City Classic at Solider Field Friday afternoon.

Lincoln-Way (24-22) got off to a fast start, scoring just three minutes into the game, but was not able to do any further damage. After a sluggish start, the Wildkits were finally able to put some pressure on their opponents, scoring a power-play goal with 5:03 remaining in the first period.

The second period, however, is where all of the action happened.

“I think at first we were all a little shell-shocked,” said Lincoln-Way’s David Bolek, who scored the game-winner. “Once we calmed down, it was just like a normal game.”

Unlike the first period, it was Evanston (10-16-6) that dominated the early stretch of the second. The Wildkits attempted three shots on goal before Lincoln-Way could find its rhythm.

Lincoln-Way, the home team, scored twice in 15 seconds take a 3-1 lede. Chad DeGroot had the first tally, while Andy Zuniga added the second.

Lincoln-Way added on to its lead with 2:25 remaining when Garett Deegan scored.

But then an onslaught of activity ensued. Four goals, three by Evanston, were scored in the last 1:45 of the second period. Wildkit Jack Egofske added his second goal of the night in the spurt, knocking one in with 1:45 remaining. Bolek then scored what proved to be the decisive goal 44 seconds later.

But Egofske wasn’t finished. He found the back of the net with 19 seconds remaining to pick up a hat trick and also assisted on a Brandon Hilliard goal at the second period horn.

“Playing at Soldier Field was pretty awesome,” Bolek said. “But scoring what was the game winner? Something I’ll always remember.”
