WILMETTE — Lake Forest senior Sam Downey scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the last three quarters to lead the Lake Forest boys basketball team to a 63-45 victory over Evanston at Loyola’s War on the Shore. The 6-foot-9 center and Yale recruit combined with 6-7 sophomore forward Evan Boudreaux to score 45 points as the Scouts picked up their first win in four games.
Downey scored back-to-back baskets midway through the second quarter that started the Scouts on an 11-0 run to end the first half. That sent them into the locker room with a 31-22 lead.
“Going inside sets up a lot of options for us,” Downey said. “The inside-out game sets up our offense to be great.”
Lake Forest (14-6) trailed by as many as nine in the first quarter, but it was all Scouts in the final 24 minutes. Evanston (7-15) did its best to hang around, but the youthful Wildkits were outmatched by the taller, more veteran team. Junior guard Dante Henley led Evanston with 13 points. Junior guard Jackson Mihevc added 12 points in the team’s seventh loss in a row.
