EVANSTON — Loyola junior point guard Kevin Kucera has run the show all season, but the team has needed a little more offense from him, especially in the absence of injured guards Peter Pujals, Richie Wehman and James Clarke.
Kucera delivered Saturday night, scoring 13 points to help the Ramblers to a 42-35 nonconference win over Evanston.
Ramblers junior sharpshooter Jack Morrissey hit just one of his first 11 shots from the field. But with the game hanging in the balance, he delivered. Morrissey (team-high 15 points) hit a back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a five-point lead.
“Jack is the best shooter I’ve ever coached, (but) he’s going to have bad shooting nights,” Loyola coach Tom Livatino said. “But good shooters keep on shooting. It wasn’t his night shooting. But he hung in there and came through big time in the fourth quarter.”
Loyola (6-1) trailed 22-15 at the break, but turned the intensity of its zone defense up after halftime, trapping more aggressively. The young Wildkits (4-5) committed several turnovers and scored just one field goal in the third quarter and 13 points in the second half.
Three players tied for high-scoring honors for Evanston with six points apiece: senior Pete Winslow and juniors Demetrius Bogan and Jack Kremin.
