Leinenweber finishes season strong

It’s a good guess Peter Leinenweber wasn’t on anyone’s radar at the start of the season.
Even the Loyola junior admitted he wasn’t feeling good about his golf game back in August.
“I wasn’t close to making the lineup,” said Leinenweber, who lives in Evanston. “I had a bad tryout, so I had to work my (way) into playing throughout the season.”
Leinenweber finally earned a spot in late September, and he’s been one of the best Ramblers since that time.
He proved that at The Den at Fox Creek when he tied for 14th at the Class 3A tournament after shooting a 4-over 76 on Friday.
The tournament was shortened to one round after thunderstorms washed out Saturday’s final 18 holes. It was the third time the state tournament was decided by one round, the last coming in 2001.
“I felt good out there,” Leinenweber said. “I didn’t do too much wrong. “I was really happy with my year. I don’t think I had a bad round after I got going.”
Other than junior Chris Nolan’s 78, the same can’t be said for the rest of the Ramblers, at least at the state tournament.
Standouts Michael Abrahamson and Michael Hultquist struggled in the first round.
Abrahamson, a junior, shot an 83, while the senior Hultquist posted an 88.
Loyola, which took third place with four of the same players last season, finished 11th out of 12 teams with a 321. Seniors Colin O’Neill and Creighton Helms both ended their prep careers with 84s. ~.
