Eileen Hurley’s basket at the buzzer to end the first half didn’t seem like a big deal at the time.
New Trier coach Teri Rodgers saw it differently.
“She took her time, and it was a calm shot,” Rodgers said. “If you have to rush your shots, you probably shouldn’t take them.”
Trailing by five at intermission, the No. 23-ranked Trevians played much more patiently on offense in the second half and it led to a 52-45 win over Evanston at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Northwestern-bound Maggie Lyon scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the final two quarters. The senior scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to conclude a 10-0 run that gave the Trevians (19-9 overall, 6-4 CSL South) the lead for good.
“The first half we might have been forcing it too much,” Lyon said. “I wasn’t getting clean looks, and I had to fight for my points. The second half I looked to get easier shots.”
Isabella Bosco started the comeback effort with a basket at the 1:05 mark of the third quarter. Lyon’s steal and layup left New Trier, which also used a full-court press to frustrate Evanston, up 37-34 going into the fourth.
Lyon then added another basket and two free throws in the first three minutes of the final quarter to put the Trevians ahead 41-34.
Alecia Cooley, who was a force in the first half and led Evanston (14-12, 4-6) with 18 points, kept the Wildkits close in the fourth. The 6-foot-2 junior’s free throws with 35.9 seconds to go left the score 49-45.
But the Trevians followed by going 3-for-4 on free throws to earn their second win over Evanston in three tries this season. Emma Rossi scored the game’s first four points and finished with 11 points for the winners.
“We wanted to focus on finishing the regular season strong,” Lyon said.
New Trier opens the playoffs Tuesday against Resurrection at the Glenbrook South Regional. Evanston plays Von Steuben at its own regional Tuesday.
“We talked Monday about treating this game like the first playoff game,” Rodgers said. “We wanted to go ahead and get in that mode.”
