EVANSTON — An election challenge has been filed against a First Ward Aldermanic candidate in the April 9 election, alleging he failed to correctly identify the office he was running for on his petitions and that the documents contain other violations. The city’s Municipal Officers Electoral Board is scheduled to hear the petition challenge filed by First Ward resident Barbara Janes at 11 a.m. Friday in the aldermanic library at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 N. Ridge Ave. In her objection, Janes, a longtime supporter of incumbent First Ward Alderman Judy Fiske, charged that candidate Edward Tivador’s petition … ]]> Mon, 11 Feb 2013 06:50:40 -0500 http://evanston.suntimes.com/news/politics/17444785-418/resident-challenges-evanston-candidates-petitions.html http://evanston.suntimes.com/news/politics/17444785-418/resident-challenges-evanston-candidates-petitions.html <![CDATA[ Evanston candidate filings ebb and flow ]]>

EVANSTON Four years ago, six of the City Council’s aldermanic seats were contested and the mayor’s race featured a field of four candidates. With filing ending last week, only two aldermanic races were contested, and that number could easily slip to one, with a petition challenge pending in the First Ward. Why aren’t more people running? Candidates who ran in 2009 and before offered a number of reasons for the drop off. “One of the most potent emotions in politics is anger and there isn’t that feeling,’’ said John Zbesko, who ran a strong campaign for Seventh Ward alderman in … ]]> Wed, 09 Jan 2013 22:56:00 -0500 http://evanston.suntimes.com/news/politics/17370255-505/evanston-candidate-filings-ebb-and-flow.html http://evanston.suntimes.com/news/politics/17370255-505/evanston-candidate-filings-ebb-and-flow.html <![CDATA[ County commissioners give preliminary OK to new district map ]]>

A proposed map redrawing boundaries for the Cook County Board of Commissioners districts received overwhelming preliminary approval Friday. Fifteen of the 17 commissioners signed off on the plan, which is slated for a final vote Tuesday. The lone dissenting vote came from Commissioner Earlean Collins (1st District), who has voiced concerns that population shifts could result in the African-American community losing one of its five seats on the board, which has a total of 17 commissioners. Collins did not return calls seeking comment on Friday. Commissioner William Beavers (4th) did not vote on the proposal. Sen. Mark Kirk’s condition has been upgraded from “fair” to “good.” Doctors hope to be able to re-attach the 8-inch-by-4-inch section of his skull that had to be removed after he suffered a stroke two weeks ago. Then the Highland Park Republican can begin physical therapy. “Sen. Kirk is making good progress in his recovery,” said Richard Fessler, his neurosurgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “He is visiting with family and even watched the Super Bowl last night. Chicago-area ministers want a voice in the planned overhaul of the troubled Cook County morgue and are asking to meet with board President Toni Preckwinkle. “If you don’t hold people’s feet to the fire, the problems don’t go away,” the Rev. Democrat and Evanston attorney Jeff Smith announced he will withdraw his candidacy today from the 17th state House district. Citing reasons, Smith said the district’s redrawing in May 2010 did not provide enough “time for a real primary discussion.” The Primary Election is March 20. “The unusually short schedule instead sets up a battle of branding, mainly purchased, with unacceptable levels of political casualties,” he said in an email. “Suspending my campaign will free up many important resources for many other political, professional, and personal projects in which I and others were invested when this race suddenly arose.
