Jarekus Singleton, Selwyn Birchwood bring 21st century blues to S.P.A.C.E.

Blues is a continually evolving art form. Two ways that’s working out will be evident in the music of rising talents Jarekus Singleton and Selwyn Birchwood, who will perform at Evanston’s S.P.A.C.E. on July 28.

Jarekus Singleton will be celebrating the release of “Refuse to Lose,” his Alligator Records debut performance. Singleton blends hip-hop wordplay, rock energy and R&B with contemporary and traditional blues inspired by the masters.

Singleton elaborated on his work, emphasizing its deeply personal roots and his debt to the greats of the past. “I wanted to play blues after I heard a local band play Albert King’s song, “I’ll play the blues for you!” It was funky and it was new for me and I loved it. I immediately went home and learned how to play that song and I’ve been a BIG blues fan ever since,” he said.

He’s also looking forward to creating new generations blues fans through his own work.

“My music is from my heart and soul,” he explained. “I’m always excited to write and create fresh music. I have my own sound and style in which is inspired by blues masters like Albert King and Luther Allison etc. When those guys stepped on the scene they were new and fresh and were innovators and that’s what i feel that I’m doing, being an innovator for this genre. The fans are genuinely excited which is VERY exciting to me! I’ve had SO many kids and young adults come up to me at these festivals and other gigs, telling me how they are inspired they are about my music! The kids are Digging it and that’s way cool to me!”

Also on stage will be Florida blues artist Selwyn Birchwood, the winner (in a field of over 125 other bands) of the 2013 International Blues Challenge. His new release is “Don’t Call No Ambulance” also an Alligator recording. Birchwood plays a high octane blues, fueled by his personal passion for his art.
