Two more Evanston Township High School graduates have received Joseph and Linnie Lee Moragne Memorial Scholarships.

Deanna Howlett and Mark Johnson are this year’s recipients, the 45th and 46th award recipients to date.

Howlett is pursuing her education at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where she majors in electrical engineering.

Johnson attends Valparaiso University where he majors in engineering and expects to play baseball.

ETHS faculty and peers had lots to say about these outstanding students, making them eligible for these awards:

Howlett’s philosophy of life is “you get out of life what you put into it.” Her actions prove this.

She has worked in the ETHS business and student accounts offices. In the summers she has worked for the Fund for Public Interest and worked in the ETHS counseling office. In the ETHS choir she is a section leader.

Howlett was a member and team captain of the ETHS policy debate team.

She was a member of the ETHS ambassador program, where she served a guide and a mentor to freshmen.

Her volunteer programs focused on helping others. She helped in District 65 at fund-raisers and school carnivals. Her reason for volunteering for Habitat for Humanity is to help provide homes for those who need the help.

She was a summer volunteer at her church’s Summer Vacation Bible School because it gives children a safe, fun and productive experience. Howlett was also a teen facilitator at a program for middle school students that deals with common teen issues.

Howlett’s involvement in these activities and others offers great insight into who she is and what she believes.

Johnson is an engaged learner, a self starter, a role model for his peers, and a kind and compassionate young man.

The epitome of a successful student-athlete, Johnson last year maintained his high honor roll status, earned induction into the National Honor Society as well as earned the ETHS baseball program’s Impact Award in recognition of his character and the positive impact he has made on the program since freshman year.

Johnson balanced the demands of a rigorous honors and advanced placement course load with school, club and travel team baseball along with volunteer tutoring.

He was a voice for the student perspective on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and served as co-captain of the varsity baseball team for two years.

Throughout high school, he did office work at a mortgage company. Each summer he worked with the youth baseball camps at ETHS.

Contributions to the Moragne Memorial Scholarship Fund may be made to the ETHS Educational Foundation (memo line: J&LL Moragne Scholarship Fund), Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston IL 60201.
