EVANSTON — This year’s Joseph & Linnie Lee Memorial Scholarships have been awarded to Evanston Township High School graduates Shytasha Foster and Rauqelle Smith, according to a news release.
Shytasha is off to Saint Xavier University in New Orleans to study accounting. Rauqelle will be attending Illinois State University in Normal in the fall, where she will study to become an athletic trainer.
Shytasha’s instructors and friends have described her as a unique individual with a tremendous amount of drive and determination. She acknowledges that life has not always come easy for her, and there will be no “knocking her down” now. Since the age of 16, Shytasha has worked faithfully at various local retailers, at Six Flags in the summer and in the ETHS business office. When she transferred to Evanston she immediately became a favorite among her peers. She was a runner-up for the student council president position, and thus was a member of the student council board. Shytasha is a member of “Peer Jury” and is active in promoting and participating with The Evanston Women’s Club’s “Dreams Delivered” program. In the classroom she is pinpointed as a sharp and analytical leader. Her counselor calls her, “The Boss” because it is clear that everywhere she goes, her peers look to her for guidance and direction.
Rauqelle is noted for having a positive impact on others and being a solid student. As soon as sophomore year she began working part-time at Le Peep Pancake House and Grill in Evanston. Rauqelle has managed to successfully balance work, school, volunteering and volleyball commitments throughout her high school years. As a junior and senior leader, she is always well-prepared, liked and respected by classmates, and considerate of her peers. Additionally, she has a charitable spirit and has demonstrated such by being an active member of the student board for The Women’s’ Club of Evanston and volunteering at her former grammar school to coach volleyball.
Tax-deductible contributions to the Joseph & Linnie Lee Moragne Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1992, may be sent to the ETHS Educational Foundation, 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston, IL 60204.
