Evanston man denied bail in Palmer House Hilton Hotel shooting

An Evanston man was ordered held without bail Thursday for allegedly shooting and injuring another man at a private birthday party at the historic Palmer House Hilton Hotel last month.
Brian Martel Miller was at the gathering Jan. 20 in the suite when he and others ere asked to leave for being too “loud,” Assistant Cook County State’s Aattorney Erin Antonietti said.
Miller then returned to the Loop hotel’s 22nd-floor suite a few minutes later with five other men, Antonietti said.
The victim, who was at the celebration with his girlfriend, allegedly saw Miller remove a revolver from his pants.
The 25-year-old man then jumped up and grabbed the barrel of Miller’s gun and a struggle ensued, Antonietti said.
Both men eventually fell to the floor, and when the victim took his hand off the gun, Miller grabbed the weapon and shot him in the left thigh, Antonietti said.
Miller then allegedly fled the party, which was hosted by three women.
At the time of the shooting, Miller was out on bond for another pending weapons case, Antonietti said.
“No bail can be high enough that will keep the city safe from this defendant,” the prosecutor told Judge Edward Harmening.
The victim and his girlfriend allegedly identified Miller in a photo array and line-up.
Miller, a graduate of Evanston Township High School, has been charged with aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm.
The 22-year-old, who is nicknamed “Ears,” has several tattoos, including one on his chest that reads: “Grind now shine later,” according to a police report.
