EVANSTON — Copper downspouts valued at about $1,000 were stolen from an Evanston church over the weekend.

The theft of three copper gutter downspouts at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in the 1100 block of Washington Street in Evanston was reported to police on Tuesday, police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

The theft was believed to have occurred between Friday and Tuesday.

Such thefts, even from churches, are not uncommon, Parrott said. “We’ve had several of these occur over the past few years” at businesses and residences.

Parrott did not have information on how high the thief or thieves had to climb to get to the downspouts.

There was no description of the offender and no one was in custody as of Wednesday morning.
