A whirl of ‘Carnaval’ spirit for Barrington Youth Dance

The magnificent setting was matched by the evening’s dancing as the Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble’s 22 dancers performed new work from internationally esteemed choreographer Guillermo Leyva Barley at Sanfilippo Estate’s “Place de la Musique” in Barrington Hills on Oct. 13.
While all attention was on the dancers from BYDE and Cerqua Rivera Dance Theater for a significant portion of the night, BYDE’s 2012 Gala Fundraiser “Carnaval: An Evening in the Caribbean” was filled with a plethora of vintage beauty that demanded acknowledgment of its own.
Before enjoying their Caribbean-inspired dinner, guests marveled at the museum-like venue’s 200 antique music boxes, 65 coin-operated pianos and a restored 1890 European carousel — Eden Palais — complete with carved Hubner horses. The evening’s dining, dancing and auctions were followed by carousel-riding aboard the century-old antique.
Overall, BYDE’s 200 guests helped raise about $70,000 to fund a number of the non-profit dance arts company’s outreach programs and scholarships. The monies help support the Patricia Whitmore Scholarship for Artistic Talent, the Rusty Hernandez Scholarship for Boys and BYDE’s Scholarship for Financial Need.
“Our mission to promote, educate and enlighten our audiences through these performances and programs is made possible by the financial support we receive from our loyal donors, the encouragement and expertise of our professional staff and the hundreds of volunteer hours provided by our BYDE families and friends,” said Diane Crawford, BYDE’s executive director.
The evening’s auctioning offered guests the chance to win a variety of quality products and one-of-a-kind experiences, including an iPad and a three-day weekend driving experience in a Lamborghini Gallardo coupe.
Foundation, state, corporate and community donors included: The Roberts Family Foundation; The Benson Foundation; The Sanfilippo Foundation; The Illinois Arts Council; The Duchossois Family Foundation; The Wamburg Family Charitable Fund; Rose packing Company; Barrington Junior Women’s Club; The Demar Foundation; The Barrington Children’s Charities; and Live4Lali.
The Sanfilippo Estate is not open to the general public, except through pre-arranged group tours and private charity events.
