Here’s the best bit of career advice my father ever offered: Chicago’s a sports town — be able to talk sports at work.

In order to do that, he advised me to read the sports section as if it were Soap Opera Digest.

Which is how I know Kerry Wood pitches for the Chicago Cubs and his wife, Sarah, serves as the executive director of their newly formed charity, the Wood Family Foundation.

“We’ve been involved with Children’s [Memorial Hospital] for the past decade,” Wood said. “We decided it was time to launch our own charity.”

Their first North Shore-based fundraising event is a breakfast and fashion show at 9 a.m. May 3 at Neiman Marcus Northbrook.

“Any girl likes fashion, and Neiman’s just puts on the best shows,” she said. “You can spot the trends and put all guilt aside because you’re shopping for a great cause.”

Deerfield native and jewelry-designer-to-the-stars Lana Bramlette is slated to make a special appearance in addition to the runway looks from high-end fashion designers selected by the Neiman Marcus staff.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at woodfamilyfoundation.org.
