Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show opens Oct. 18

Things of beauty will be a joy for many from Oct. 18 through 21 in Winnetka.
Antiques, vintage treaures and finely designed works spanning several centuries will again grace the Winnetka Community House during the annual Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show. “It’s a fantastic mix, there’s something for everyone,” says Kristin Lolli, chair of the event this year.
Dealers at the 60-year-old, internationally regarded event sponsored by the Woman’s Board of Winnetka Community House will showcase American, British, French and Asian antiques, as well as pieces from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and mid-century design movements.
“We have dealers from all across North America,” notes Lolli. Seeing it will require a good day, or even two, of serious browsing, she added.
A new exhibitor this year is Karen Tragos of the Northfield-based Plum Interiors. As a three-year member of the Woman’s Board, Tragos is delighted to be a part of the 2012 event.
Her design, she says, falls squarely into the modernist camp at the show. “Fun, colorful and innovative” is how she describes it. Influences have been greats like Le Corbusier, and she nods to contemporaries Jonathan Adler and L.A. designer Mary McDonald.
But Tragos’ personal flair is most evident in the bright, contemporary hues and unexpected details of her designs. Her chandeliers, for example, might sport beads and drops of eye-catching turquoise glass, or intricate, gold-beaded branches.
“Everything I do for a client has to be fun — and fit their needs,” she says.
Tragos will show examples of her lighting, a lot of accessories and new furniture she’s designed. “It will be like walking into a living room,” she says.
But Antiques + Modernism Winnetka offers much more than its browser’s paradise.
It all starts with the sumptuous Preview Party on Thursday, Oct. 18, (separate admission) offering first look at the show. On Friday morning, J. Michael Flanigan of TV’s “Antiques Roadshow” headlines the VIP buffet brunch (separate admission).
All new, says Lolli, “is our ‘Mad Men Cocktail Party’ from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, free with show admission. We’ll have ’60s cocktails.” Remember gimlets and Old Fashioneds? They’ll be available at the cash bar, and free hors d’oeuvres will match.
Guests are encouraged to come in vintage or ’60s-inspired wear to mingle with vintage-attired “visitors” looking very much like “Don Draper,” “Joan,” “Peggy” and others, as they check out mid-century pieces from the show.
All in all, Lolli expects an exciting weekend that will ultimately benefit the Community House, one of her favorite places. “It’s a great place for educational opportunities, for recreational opportunities, for weddings,” she says, “and just a great place to bring together people from the area.”
