A young girl finds adventure on the high seas in “How I Became a Pirate.” Bradley Kisner directs the family musical, based on Melinda Long’s acclaimed children’s book, for the Highland Park Players Theater for Young Audiences. It tells the story of Jennifer Jacob’s journey with Captain Braid Beard and his crew.
The director praised the songs in the fast-paced show, as well as the message. “It’s really great to go on adventures but, at the end of the day, being home is what’s really nice,” he said.
Kisner believes grownups will enjoy this musical as much as children do.
“There’s lots of jokes that go right over the kids’ heads that the parents get,” he said.
The cast of nine includes eight adults and 12-year-old Riverwoods seventh grader Brittany Smithson as Jennifer.
Performances are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Feb. 2-10 at Edgewood Middle School Theater, 929 Edgewood Road, Highland Park. Tickets are $10.
