Community leaders come together at Chamber event

For all its diversity, the various public entities in Evanston often act within their own sphere.

That changes in the once-a-year MashUp sponsored by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce.

“We actually looked into this, and there’s no other community where the city and local university and the chamber are joined together at one event,” said Elaine Kemna-Irish, executive director of the chamber. “And the idea is we just want to converse and collaborate.”

The fifth annual MashUp, as it has been come to be called, is scheduled from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., next Sept. 16. The gathering of Evanston leaders, ranging from business, academia, arts, government, meet together under a giant tent set up on the Northwestern University beach, whose location is still to be announced.

The information will be posted on evanstonmashup.com.

At the event, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl is scheduled to join with Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro, to present the Catalyst Award to three Northwestern professors who have chosen Evanston to launch businesses.

Meanwhile, a second award, The Spirit of Evanston, will to go to Dick Peach, former chamber president, and business person who symbolizes “going beyond the call,” to make life better for the Evanston community.
