Evanston Library Book Review: ‘Norwegian by Night’ by Derek B. Miller

When widower Sheldon Horowitz relocates to Oslo to live with his granddaughter Rhea and her husband Lars, he feels displaced and useless. When a terrified neighbor and her 7-year old boy seek refuge in Sheldon’s flat from an abusive husband, it’s the start of a wild adventure that calls upon all of Sheldon’s survival tactics and triggers a spate of memories for the former Marine sniper (or was he only a file clerk during the Korean War as Rhea believes?). Miller’s fast paced telling will keep you turning pages, chuckling at Sheldon’s dark humor and the antics of the not-so-bright quartet of thugs who are hunting for the boy, and pondering the tragedies and truths of war.  (Barbara Levie)
