The Evanston Police Department’s Traffic Bureau has received a second place award in the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge for its traffic safety program, the department announced Wednesday.
The department was judged against other departments with between 101 and 250 sworn officers, said Cmdr. Jay Parrott, the department spokesperson.
Parrott said the award takes into account traffic safety initiatives as well as steps the bureau takes toward promoting greater safety for drivers, bikers and pedestrians.
In the past, the department has highlighted the awards in bids for grant monies from the Illinois Department of Transportation, he said.
For its second place finish, the department received a radar gun and software to assist in accident reconstruction, he said.
Evanston traffic officers are involved in a wide range of duties, he said, including providing assistance in charity events, the July 4th parade and activities and Northwestern University football games.
