The real estate blog Movoto has broken down the wealthiest Americans by state with a new interactive map.
Movoto lists Ken Griffin as the richest person in Illinois, worth $5.5 billion. Griffin, 45, is the founder of the hedge fund firm Citadel LLC. A graduate of Harvard, Griffin currently lives in Chicago. Griffin ranks #271 on the Forbes’ World Billionaires list and #103 on the Forbes 400 Richest People in America.
The two richest people on Movoto’s ranking are Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates (Washington) and Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO Warren Buffet (Nebraska). Gates is reportedly worth $80 billion while Buffet is worth $63.1 billion.
The person with the smallest fortune on the list is Robert B. Gillam (Alaska), the President and CEO of McKinley Capital Management, whose wealth comes in at a measly $700 million.
According to Movoto, about half of the wealthiest people in each state are founders of companies. Others inherited their wealth, such as the Waltons. Sam Walton founded WalMart in 1962 in Arkansas. Three Waltons are the richest people in their states today.
