Two wounded—one critically—in Evanston motorcycle crash

Evanston police have brought charges against one of two motorcyclists involved in a collision Saturday night on Emerson Street, which left both injured.

Travis Johnson, 30, of 8427 Crawford Ave., Skokie, was charged with felony aggravated driving while under the influence, a Class 4 felony, as well as two counts of misdemeanor driving while under the influence, police said Monday.

The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. A police investigation found the motorcycle driven by Johnson accelerated around a vehicle, using the bike lane, and then rear-ended motorcyclist Daniel Smith as both traveled west bound on Emerson at Hartrey Avenue.

Both riders were separated from their bikes. The two were taken to Evanston Hospital.

Johnson, who was wearing a helmet, sustained a cervical fracture and facial injuries.

Smith, who police said was not wearing a helmet, sustained facial fractures and bleeding on the brain, and was listed in critical condition Monday in the intensive care unit.
