City sets mid-October completion date on lagoon project

City officials have pushed back the completion date on a renovation project at the Arrington Lakefront Lagoon.

At the July 21 City Council meeting, Public Works Director Suzette Robinson was asked about the status of the work.

Robinson said officials have pushed back the date a month from the end of September to October.

The $1.4 million lagoon renovation was made possible through a $500,000 contribution from philanthropist Michael B. Arrington in honor of his late father, Illinois legislator W. Russell Arrington.

The city entered into a contract with Streamwood-based Clauss Brothers on the project in March.

The unfinished condition of the lagoon has been a factor in several lakefront celebrations, including the July 4th fireworks, forcing groups to work around it. The project start had already been pushed back a season before the city entered in a contract with Clauss.

To date, it has been “just a lot of demolition,” Robinson said. She indicated the majority of site work on the project is done.

She said the extra month was selected to make sure we get all things completed.

Alderman Judy Fiske, 1st, said she had fielded a number of calls about lack of cleanup on the site.

Robinson indicated at the meeting that work has proceeded on the project despite heavy rains in June and July.

Officials, meanwhile, have set the following work schedule:

• August: Completion of waterfall masonry work, additional plumbing/mechanical installations, masonry reconstruction at the WPA steps, concrete, permeable concrete and brick pavement installations, electrical and lighting installation and basin waterproofing.

• September: The donor sign installation, additional concrete and crushed stone pavements, railings, landscaping, tree planting as well as the site restoration.

Officials have set a mid-October completion date.
