Evanston bans swimming at beaches due to high waves

For those considering braving the unusually cool temperatures and cold lake water, the National Weather Service is warning of dangerous swimming conditions at beaches.

Though all Chicago Park District beaches remain open Wednesday, wave heights in Lake Michigan could reach 7-11 feet, according to a beach hazard statement from the weather service.

Strong rip currents are also possible, the weather service warns.

Evanston has banned swimming at all beaches Wednesday due to waves, though the beaches remain open, according to a statement from the city.

The NWS statement remains in effect through Thursday morning, when temperatures are expected to be in the lower 70s with mostly sunny skies, according to the weather service.

A small craft advisory is also in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the weather service.
