A sentencing date of July 29 has been scheduled for a former Gurnee woman found guilty of delivering the heroin that resulted in the overdose death of a 15-year-old Vernon Hills High School student in 2011.

Michelle Lee, 21, who was convicted of one count of delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 2 felony, faces a potential sentence of three to seven years in prison at her sentencing hearing before Judge Mark Levitt.

After her conviction by a jury in May, Levitt revoked Lee’s bond. She had been free on 10 percent of a $50,000 bond, and has remained in Lake County Jail since then.

Her sentencing was scheduled to take place last week, but was delayed on a defense motion related to the availability of character witnesses for Lee.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Jim Newman, Lee sold $40 worth of heroin to three Vernon Hills High School friends who pooled their money to purchase it and then snorted it at Butler Lake Park in Libertyville in the early evening of Oct. 7, 2011.

The victim in the case began showing symptoms of an overdose soon after snorting the heroin, and one of the other two girls began CPR while the other called 911.

The girl was treated by paramedics and at the hospital, receiving a compound that counteracts the symptoms of opiate overdose before being released from the hospital around midnight in the custody of her parents.

She died sometime later that morning at home of what officials termed a rebound overdose.

Prior to being remanded to Lake County Jail following the verdict, Lee had been living with her parents in Evanston with a curfew under conditions of her bond.
