Citizen’s call leads to arrest of two Evanston juveniles on burglary charges

Updated: February 22, 2012 12:21PM

A suspicious-person call set Evanston police in motion Tuesday and resulted in the arrest of two Evanston juveniles on residential burglary charges.

Police fielded a call at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday of suspicious persons spotted in a yard in the 2200 block of Lincoln Street, said Cmdr. Jay Parrott, the Evanston Police Department’s public information officer, in a release issued Thursday.

Police responded, he said, and found two boys in the area who immediately began to run away from uniformed officers.

After a brief chase, officers took two suspects into custody. Both were identified positively by the caller, according to the release.

Both boys were 15 years old and live in Evanston, he said.

Following the arrests, investigators from the department’s juvenile bureau were brought into the investigation, Parrott said, and police learned the two juveniles were scouting the area to commit a residential burglary.

As a result of the arrests, police were able to clear two other incidents — a residential burglary that occurred Monday on the 1400 block of Washington Street and an attempted burglary Monday on the 1200 block of Austin Street.

Suspicious-person calls “can lead to things,” Parrott said in noting the importance of citizens working with police.

Both of the juveniles were referred to juvenile court; as a result of these arrests, police are investigating a third juvenile, Parrott said.

No further information was released about the incidents because the arrestees are juveniles, he said.
